There is no beating around the bush when it comes to the food that Americans consume each day. We come in first for the largest food consumption in the world, following England. From fried foods, to oil, grease and fat, we can't get away from it. NYS says they are trying to eliminate unhealthy foods in schools due to the increase in overweight children. In my opinion, they're doing a poor job. The temptation of fries, ice cream, snacks, and high sugared drinks stare adolescence in the face screaming, "Buy Me!" Why can't we kick all the unhealthy foods out of our schools and start buying more foods that are actually good for us. The biggest pretext I take notice of when I bring up this matter is, "Well it doesn't have trans fat!" Who cares? It still contains every other fat that you could possibly envision.
These are the foods we need to get rid of:
• Get rid of fries
• The iced tea and lemonade
• The ice cream
• The High calorie snacks
I know this article in people's eyes is totally pointless because they don't care. If it tastes good, they eat it. End of story. However, maybe I'll make a difference in one person, and that's all I ask.

Back when I went to WVHS, I felt like I had no choice for lunch, because I'm basically a vegan, and the closest thing to vegan food is the fries (even though they are made with the same fat/grease as the meats -- so i've heard). This is high school -- we don't all have the time or skills to make a healthy lunch, and for $2-3.00, WVHS should be able to do that for its students.
I think WVHS needs to get rid of the fries, make the pizza less greasy, and add more vegetables to the hot meals. Maybe even some fat-free dressing for the salad.
...& If there are still donuts, those should go, too. But not the cookies, those are too good. =)
There are organizations that will help schools like WVHS get healthier food, and I'm willing to bet that PETA (even though many of us, including me, dislike them) could put some better vegetarian/vegan options in the cafeteria. (Cuz vegetables are better than meat-greasy fries any day...)
Exactly!
I'm in the Rainbow Alliance, and we're not allowed to do bake sales because it "goes against the schools health and wellness program."
Okay, so, we can't sell brownies, but you can sell fries, cookies, and have three different vending machines?
